3G iPhone Announcement
The original iPhone was possibly the
hottest gadget on the market in 2007. People flocked to
Apple stores and AT&T outlets to get their hands on
this feature packed device. The device had been rumored
for a long time, with Apple releasing teasers of what an
iPod phone might look like, and fans speculating on
features and specs. Finally, in 2007, the iPhone was
released. The lines were long, the users excited.
However, the release was not perfect. For starters, this
phone was not available unlocked, AT&T was the sole
provider that could be used for the device, and it left
anyone using any other company out in the rain. Also,
upon purchase of the phone at an Apple store, users were
not treated to the device's features until after it was
activated by AT&T. All of this, plus the fact that
the phone did not run as fast as many 3G competitors, led
to criticism.
The phone sold
well, however there were a lot of critics, and Apple
swore it was pushing towards 3G as fast as it could.
Recently, as the key note presentation at the world wide
developers conference in 2008. Jobs was greeted the way
he usually is, with much applause. He then went on to
announce that the 3G version was on it's way, this also
drew much applause, as it was something that had been
promised a year ago. Next, Jobs talked about the look of
the device, very similar to the original iPhone, and
mentioned the universal head phone jack, another audience
moment. He then went on to discuss the 3G's speed,
comparing it to Wi-Fi and 2G, and finally came to
GPS.
The crowd ate up all the info on the GPS functionality. Lastly, Jobs unveiled the price, a mere $199, very reasonable for a 3G device. In the end, he explained Apple's plan to release the phone in 22 countries simultaneously, and that it would be released in as many as 70 countries before long. The crowd very much enjoyed the speech, and so did Apple fans.
